I like spring hoops because of the tension.
I always put the hoop on a flat surface place the front of the fabric facing me because after I place the spring hoop I want the back (or smooth side) to be the back surface so that if I temporarily put it down the front won't get dirty because it's inside the hoop.
Plus I see where the spring handles are I position the handles so that the hand I am holding the hoop with covers them.
I never leave my work in any hoop or scroll with tension. I generally remove them when I am finished stitching for the time being.
