Embroidery on knitting

I am new to knitting and embroidery.

I wanted to do a little embroidery on a hat that I am making. Just a few simple branches and flowers. Do you have any tips for that type of work. For instance what type of yarn or floss. It seems like any kind of transfer would be difficult on knitting. There isn't much information out there on this type of work. Your site has been very helpful on teaching the stitches.
