I'm going to be hand-stitching some designs on an afghan as a gift. I've done it once before by stitching on a separate piece and then attaching the fabric to the blanket. By doing this, I intended to protect the stitching on the back to prevent fraying and little ones picking at the back.
It didn't look bad, but I thought it might look cleaner by stitching directly on the blanket this time.
I'm stuck, though, because I'm not sure the best way to protect the back without hurting the overall look and feel of the afghan.
