Which is best for the beginner?

by Holly
(Virginia)

Hello, I've never done needlework of any kind. I'm interested in starting but am stumped by all the different types out there: Cross stitch, Counted cross stitch, crewell, embroidery, needlepoint etc etc..

I've tried to find a website that details the differences in all of those but believe it or not, couldn't find one. Would it be possible to reccomend a site that explains the differences and also maybe suggest which might be best for the beginner?

Thanks for your time,
Holly

Which is best for the beginner

I don't think any one "type" of stitching is "better" to begin with. Just look at the different types of stitching and find the one you like the most and start with that. Once you have started and learn to do one type of stitching the rest will follow naturally because at some point you'll want to try something new. A good way to find tutorials on the web is to search "stitch type" + directions, or + tutorial, or + instruction. You'll find lots of sites with plenty of instruction in most types of stitching.

Different kinds of needlework
by: Valerie Kalyani

Hi Hooly,
The easiest one I know is About.com. They have many tutorials in how the various kinds of stitching are done, and many free patterns too. And the site is 'about' a lot more than stitching, so do not be surprised. :>)
