Which fabric to use?

by Margaret
(Memphis, TN)

I have a pattern that calls for using 28 count fabric over 2 threads. Can I go down to 22 count over one thread and have it look correct or would it be best to go down to 14?

Margaret,

As you know working over 2 threads on 28 count will give the same size finished project as working on 14 count Aida.

If you changed to 22 count, over 1 thread, your work would end up smaller and daintier. You may also want to change to using just one strand of cotton floss for this project.

Whether making this change is the right choice depends on how you want to use the finished item. If it is to be framed I can't see a problem, in fact it would be cheaper to frame! However if it is something that needs to be a certain size, perhaps to fit into a jar lid or such like then changing the fabric may affect how you can finish the project.

If you have an existing frame or greetings card with an aperture that you want to fit your work into and it would turn out too big as originally designed then you can use the handy cross stitch calculator to see which fabric count would give you the size you need.

I hope this helps.
