What stitches are used for the outside of a buffet cover

I know how to do Hardanger but would like to know different stitches that can be used on the outside, or hem line, of a piece.

Many hardanger pieces would use buttonhole stitch, (with or without picots) for the edging. This can also be worked over drawn threads to give a lacy effect.

Other options would include four-sided stitch, three sided stitch or pin stitch.
