Washing a t-shirt after embroidery to remove ink

I am embroidering over ink and felt pen, messages that other people wrote to the person who owns the shirt.

How do I get the ink out of the shirt when I am done embroidering it? Handwash/clothes washer? Tumble dry or hang dry?
