Stitching with or with out a hoop on an afgan

I am stitching my granddaughter an afgan for the first time. In the past I have used hoops in order to stitch. The material on an afgan is really different from what I'm use too!

Should a hoop be used or is there something else that can be used or just use nothing at all?
