squared edge stitching

by Maureen
(Australia)

I am finishing a piece of embroidery with squared edge stitching.

I have completed the first stage successfully, but am having trouble turning the corner during working the second stage.

My book says "once the corner point is reached, trim away the excess fabric on the wrong side level with the inner line of stitching, fold in the fabric along the next edge and continue as before."

I have tried doing this without cutting, just to see what exactly I must do to turn the corner, but just can't get it right. I am frightened to cut the material until I know exactly what to do.
I'm not sure what is "the inner line of stitching"

Valerie, thank you for your advice re turning the corner, I still hadn't worked it out. Your advice has worked, no fraying, no bulk and very neat. Thank you again. Maureen

It sounds as if the edging you are doing may involve a narrow folded hem that you are stitching over. If so, I think what they are asking you to do is trim a teeny corner off the piece and then fold the sides in to create a mitered corner. Cutting the little triangle out reduces bulk at the corner. I hope this helps!
