Square Hoops

I normally work with a 6-in. wooden hoop, but am starting a large project (18" x 21") and have been wondering about a square hoop. I've seen several 8" hoops on the web (ones that are not meant specifically to be used with a sewing machine - just a plain wooden embroidery hoop), but they're expensive - $15 - $20! I think I'd like using one, and was wondering if you've had any feedback from people who use them, and what they think of them. Have you ever used one?
