Securing thread ends on a table cloth.

by Brooke
(Loves Park, Illinois, USA)

I am embroidering a table cloth for my mother in law for Christmas and was wondering how to secure the thread ends on the back.

Right now I am tying off knots and it just seems to be getting nubby!

Help!

Table Cloth
by: Valerie Kalyani

No knots!! Weave the ends under the the work to finish it off. To start a new thread, make a knot, poke your needle through so the knot is on the good side of the cloth. Be sure to place it so that the stitching you will do will cover the thread underneath. Then you cut the knot off. This called a 'waste knot'. You may find better instructions on waste knots if you look at about.com under the category of cross stitch how-to.

Fastening off thread ideas
by: Carol

Knots can be used in a project like this but it is possible for them to come undone in the wash.

Are you embroidering with more than one strand of floss/cotton? If so you could try this. Unthread your needle and thread up each individual strand in turn. Run the needle through the back of the stitches in one direction, then turn back on yourself and, missing the last stitch you went under, take it back in the opposite direction for a while. Do the same with any remaining strands but try to head off in a different direction.

This way if one strand should manage to work itself free, the stitches are still held secure by the other strands.

Anyone else have any ideas for Brooke?
