Hi, attached is a picture of a beautifully embroidered picture we bought from an old lady. The embroidery is lovely, but it is embroidered on very fine cotton or something, which is quite discoloured in the pathway and sky. It was once white, I think, and is now patchy brown. Any ideas on how to clean the middle of it without touching the flowers, and what to use?
I have an approx 50 year old large embroidery picture on what appears to be a cotton backing cloth that belonged to my mother. It has been framed as a picture for most of its life by being folded around a piece of plywood with a glass front as per a normal picture.
At some stage it obviously got damp and there are some localised water stains on the backing cloth (outside of the main embroidered area and hence visible). It looks like standard embroidery thread on a cotton cloth backing.
Is there any 'safe' way of removing the water stains before we re-frame it?
I stitched an true-size Monopoly board about 15 years ago. As I was working on it, I left it lying on a table near a potted plant. I watered the plant but didn't notice I had over-watered and some of the drained water made it's way to my needlwork. I didn't notice any damage (or staining) at the time and just let it dry and continued stitching until finished. The piece is stitched on a slightly cream Aida cloth.
Over the years I began to notice a slight staining. Now it's becoming darker and darker as time passes!
I have no problem removing it from the frame.... but, can the stain be removed after all these years???
I have several framed pictures that my aunt hand-embroidered. I would like to remove the pictures and re-frame them.
After dis-assembling one picture, the edges of the material, where the frame was, have dark brown marks (where the picture was set into the frame).
Can this be removed with something? I soaked the picture in regular laundry detergent with Clorox 2 for several hours but it would not budge. I'm afraid to use anything stronger, so as not to cause the colors to run or take the color out of the fabric. Any ideas????
Yesterday I bought a beautiful large embroidered mounted woodland picture from a car boot sale. I actually love it and I am going to have it re-framed and hang it on a stairway wall.
The picture has always been framed but without glass and is only a little dusty, so I'll gently use a vacuum soft attachment.
The embroidery is clean and bright but there's a yellowish to pale brown stain running across the upper part of the linen cloth. What's the best way to remove this stain and can this be achieved without taking the picture of it's hardboard backing?
I've not done any previous restoration work of this kind so advice will be much appreciated. Thank you.
I have a piece of stamped cross stitch that I finished about 20 years ago, and finally got professionally framed about 2 years ago. I didn't hang it right away though.
It was wrapped in plastic and sitting on top of my bookshelves at work. I'm finally ready to hang it and there is a light brown stain that wasn't there before! Perhaps the plastic leached? Anyway, I'm trying to figure out a way to remove the stain without unframing the piece. Can anyone help? Thanks!!
Yellow stain from cardboard on a piece of needlework- HELP!

My mom made a piece of needlework when she was pregnant with me - it was framed with cardboard backing it.
Through the years it has developed a yellowish-brown tinge to it from the cardboard backing. Does anyone know how to remove this without damaging the needlework? It was done on a linen fabric!
I have a framed (but not under glass) embroidery picture that my mother made 30 years ago.
It has been hanging in an attic for years and is dusty and dirty, but doesn't have stains. I'm not sure how to clean it without damaging it. Is it safe to wash by hand with mild soap?
My mother in-laws mother in-law crocheted a table cloth out of crochet cotton thread, which my mother in-law inherited. When I married my husband she gave it to, me over 15 yrs ago.
There are a few of the motifs that are separating from each other but its still in great condition.
The table cloth has these brown stains, which I never tried to remove but would like to. Could some one help? The threads are very strong but I don't want to mess it up.
