quilting and needlepoint

by Pren Wilcox

I have this idea that I would like to make a checkerboard sort of quilt.

I would like to have all the dark squares be a pieced design and all the white squares be a phrase in a needlepoint alphabet.

I have done counted cross stitch before but it was a while ago and just the kits that they sell at craft stores.

What would the best neeedle point fabric be for this application? also should I prewash the fabric and my thread? Thanks for your help! Pren

DMC is the best thread by far, but I am sure you know that. I am pretty sure that all DMC threads are color fast except the reds. There was some chemical they stopped using a number of years back. I would probably wash the skein by hand in a sink, and then rinse well in a vinegar & water solution to set the color. Maybe just the vinegar & water solution would be enough.

Agreed about the Aida cloth. I would serge the edges before washing so there is no fraying at all. Then serge the edges of each block before working on it for the same reason, plus keeping it from fraying with use.

Good luck,

I would not use anything intended for needlepoint on a quilt. It would be too stiff and would not tolerate the amount of cleaning it would need. It would be alright if you are making a wall hanging, just not a quilt for the lap or bed. A sturdy fabric for a quilt would be Aida cloth and it has many count sizes and colours so you will find one that is suitable. *Pre-shrink all fabrics before sewing!!
You can do any sort of stitching you like on it. Another choice would be to do freehand embroidery, then you could use any fabric heavy enough to handle the job. (You can use that sort of cloth for cross stitch also if you use waste canvas.)
Have fun with your project! ~Valerie Kalyani
