Quick question about blackwork

by Nicole
(Illinois)

Hello thank you in advance for taking the time to help answer my question. I'm a cross stitcher and am trying to do blackwork now,

I have a wonderful pattern but I dont know how to start it. I'm used to tucking the thread under others to lock it in place but dont see how that will work with the back stitching (I'm going to use the Holbein stitch).

So do I start and end the stitches with a knot? Or is there another way that I dont know about? Again, thank you for your advice.

Start thread with loop stitch
by: Trudy

The easiest eay to start is with the loop method. Carol has this method on her website. I almost always start all my threads with this method.

Blackwork

Use what is called an "away waste knot". Google for it...there are a lot of diagrams. In this case put the waste knot outside the stiching area. Do your stitching, then cut off the know, re-thread, and whip into the back of the stitches, being careful not to encroach into open areas.

Pictures are your best bets.....
