perspiration stains in finished design

by Melissa

I have perspiration stains in a cross stitch project I am nearly finished.

I am afraid to use cleaner on it in case the thread colours run. I did not colour treat them before I started. I have heard that DMC thread is colour treated, but this project was a kit, and the packaging doesn't indicate the brand of thread.

I am also afraid to wash my project, partly because I don't know if the thread will run and partly because I am afraid the threads will come undone. This is a new problem for me and I have no idea where to start. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Test your color fastness by placing snips of thread scraps between a couple layers of thoroughly wet but not dripping paper towels. Leave them to dry. If no color comes off, test it again with the soap you are going to use. A very mild baby shampoo is something I have tried and it was alright. If still no color comes out you could try to rinse the whole piece in cool water with the shampoo. Good luck!
