outline stitch problem

What is the correct way to do the outline stitch on a zigzag?

The calyx on the flower on my pattern has a zigzag top, but calls for an outline stitch. I don't know how to make the turns or if I should begin anew at each turn. I don't know if I am making myself clear, but imagine the top of a drawing of a tulip--the lines are short and I can't figure out how to do this neatly. I would appreciate any suggestions.
