one piece crazy quilt

by Janice

Question:

I want to make a crazy quilt, but I don't want it to look like it is made with with blocks. The old quilts look like one big block, not a bunch of 12 or 14 inch blocks.

On this site it showed how to make a block and I really liked how it was made, but I don't know how to make one big block.

Thank-you....Janice Miller

Hi Janice,

One way to create a crazy quilt in smaller blocks, without having the appearance of it being made that way, is to have pieces that do not line up with the edges of each block.

In other words let the outside patches extend beyond the edge of the smaller blocks, so that they "disguise" them.

When you come to sew the blocks together, leave the patches loose so that they can be laid across the join onto the surrounding blocks. Then attach and decorate those patches. If some extend a lot and others a little, it is quite easy to "blur" the edges so that they do not show.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Carol
