I have not done Blackwork before but I would like to do some practice before buying a 'kit proper' Is it possible to buy a piece of material for this purpose - I already have threads which are left over from a cross stitch

Beginning blackwork

Any needlecraft shop will sell pieces of Aida, the ideal one to start with is 14 count. And once you have tried it you will be hooked, it is so much quicker than cross stitch, and I find much nicer to look at.
