I am not sure if you just go around the edges of a hardanger pattern and then come back and fill in the other bits, or what to do? Can anyone advise me?

How to follow hardanger patterns
by: Maureen

I work in the order recommended in the stitching notes, but ALWAYS work the satin stitch areas first, then other surface embroidery, such as running stitch and french knots, before withdrawing threads and working bar stitches, then fillers.
If there is a lot of cutting to do,I usually work the hem before I cut and withdraw threads.
