Has anyone tried this?

I am currently cross stitching a design on an afghan done in "afghan stitch." As you probably know afghan stitch makes little squares that allow for the cross stitching over it.

Here is my question. Has anyone ever done black work with yarn, on an afghan that is stitched in this way? I just think it might be intriguing.
