Hardanger Needleweaving

by Austin
(Jacksonville, Florida, USA)

First, thanks so much for this website. As a long time knitter curious about other needlework, your website help launch me into hardanger.

I just worked your first lesson last night and have some questions now. I understand the kloster blocks and cutting very well. What I could use some clarification on is needleweaving.

When you are needleweaving, do you only weave the weft threads? What I mean to say is are you supposed to needleweave over the fully-woven squares as well, or just the loose threads in between? Maybe it's the resolution on my computer, but I couldn't tell from the picture, even after enlarging it.

I, also, faced confusion about the square filets, but realized that it is simply a dove's eye on grain. Thanks so much again for all of your hard work in sharing a very precious art.

Warmly,

Austin

When needleweaving, Austin, you are just working over the loose fabric threads. You will leave the woven squares empty of stitches. As you reach the end of each "bar" you turn right angles and work the next bar, leaving the corner square empty.

Yes, the square filets are like a doves eye, but you go into those empty squares of fabric instead of going around the center of each bar.

I am so glad you are enjoying learning hardanger. Thank you for your nice comments on my site.

Regards,

Carol
