Hamburg Edging

What is this, and how is it done? I saw it mentioned in one of Susan Coolidge's "Katy" series, in connection with sewing a bride's trousseau. I assume it is a method of trimming, or hemming, petticoats and other 19th century lingerie.

Thanks for that. Now, can anyone tell me how this hemming differs from the usual twice turned under type?

Hamburg Edging is the heming on the cloth where lace is going to attached
