how do I finish off the edges of a completed needlepoint?

The finishing technique you use would depend on the purpose the finished item will be put to. Are you wanting to make a rug or a cushion or frame the piece for example?

Also wondering what to do with the edges!

I'm also curious about how my project should be finished. I'm working on a Christmas stocking with a printed design and I'm curious if I have to be careful to cover up all of the printed color at the edges, especially when the printed color creates a discrepancy with the count of the provided pattern.

There's a big gap in the instructions between the basic stitches and stitching on the stocking lining. Thank you for any help!!!
