Fabric to make dolls house samplers

by Carrill

I would like to make some miniature pictures in cross stitch for my doll's house at a 1/12th scale. I've just made a larger picture using 14 count aida and that was very easy to use. Should I use a higher count aida eg 22 or would evenweave be better? If so what size?

Carol answers

Carill, an evenweave would be a good choice for this. Stitched over 1 fabric thread, 28 or 32 count fabric would be wonderful. If you want to try something new, you try 40 count silk gauze. Although the count is higher it is actually not that difficult to stitch on. It would be best to use a single strand of embroidery cotton for this work. Also try not to use any knots as they will show through on something this small.

Just remember that a pattern for a 12 inch cushion in "real life" would only measure 1 inch in your house. You want to try to get as many stitches into that inch as possible in order to get enough detail in the work.

I would love to see a photo when you have finished it. What period is your dolls house?

Regards,

Carol

Thank you for the advice. The style of the house is Georgian but it's being furnished as a Victorian family home. I'm currently looking for information of period samplers to inspire my designs.
