Fabric recommendation needed for Xmas ornament project

I want to make some cross stitch Christmas ornaments using a pattern from a book I bought in France. The design is 39 stitches x 39 stitches and I'd like to use linen/evenweave, but I don't know much about cross stitch fabric so I'm open to suggestions. I plan on using 2 threads, and one square per stitch. I'd like to frame each design in a 3'' or 4'' wooden hoop so my question is:

What type of fabric and what count should I use for my design so that it's roughly 2.5'' in diameter? I've attached a photo that's generally the look I'm going for. I'd also like a fabric that comes in different colors.
