embroidery thread

I want to embroider my name on a shirt. I want to do this on my own to save money--thus I would like the tools to be kept to bare minimum. Do I need to purchase a special thread to embroider my name freehand style?

Use any thread called embroidery floss. Common brands are DMC, Anchor and Susan Bates. They are sold in little bundles called skeins with a paper wrapped around them.
