Embroider a Dolls Face

Hello, I hope you can help me. I am an absolute beginner.

My Granddaughters other Nanna has made her a beautiful rag doll, but the face is blank, and she wants it to have a face.

I have drawn a face and it looks pretty good. Now I think the best way to actually give it life is to embroider the face in soft colors, so if I get it wrong I can remove it and start again. I have looked up stitches and I am sure I know what to do, I now want to know which type of thread to use.
Would you please suggest the best thread for the job.
