Edging for embroidered piece

Lovely site!!!

I am about to tackle an embroidered tablecloth with crochet edges. Ok, not good at explaining things so here we go...

When you pull say 10 threads out of the material all the way around and then there is a way to sew two/three threads together to make a sorta border...that's what I'm wanting to find out how to do and what it is called.
