I have some old ie. 80 years old, needleworks that my Grandma did. They have never been framed, although carefully covered. They are, however, a bit dirty and dusty.
I want to get them framed and was wondering if it would be worth having them cleaned or whether they are too delicate. If anybody could help me with these very precious embroideries I would be very grateful.

Hi, Years ago I read to keep a piece of screen around. The "plastic" kind, not wire. Hold it over your needlework, then vacuume. It really gets the dust out without destroying your piece. Good luck!

Hi Mary. I would not wash it first. If it has any beads or other items attached, check them to be sure they are still secure. Then I would use one of those mini vacuums intended for cleaning computer components on it. They are fairly inexpensive. I have one I use to clean banners I have hanging up. This will remove any loose dust and particals without wetting them and possibly helping them stick or stain the piece. If it still needs to be cleaned, I would use a commercial needlework cleaning compound like Restoration. But be sure to test for color-fastness. You can dab a spot on the back with a wet Q-Tip and see if any comes off. ~Valerie Kalyani
