How about outlining the hexagons in tent stitch then using sating stitches to fill them in? You could alternate the direction of the satin stitches in each hexagon so they catch the light differently.

I would use Backstitch for the Hexagaonal Shape and either leave the centres blank or stitch a French knot or a tiny bead.
