Cross Stitch Washing

by Charlotte

My Mom found a cross stitch she did 25 years ago. She was wanting to have it framed. She knows it will need to be pressed before she takes it in but she is worried about washing it? Would you wash a 25 year old cross stitch? If so, any suggestions on how to wash it?

Test for color fastness in the threads first. I do this by swabbing a wet Q-Tip on the back of the piece. Check the dark colors, reds, oranges, blacks, and dark blues. Rub the Q-Tip on the threads and see if any color comes off. Check the same places again in a few moments. Sometimes it takes a little time after being moistened to release any color that will not stay. If your Q-Tip stays clean, then you may risk washing. Cold water only, do not twist or wring and dry flat on a thick towel. Do not throw into the dryer or iron dry. When you press it, lay it face down on a towel and dry iron the back. (Steam may release color from your thread.)
