Colors running

A friend of mine has a problem with color bleeding when she washed a piece of needlework. What can be done to get the bleeding colors out?

You must continually rinse it in cold water, never hot, until no more color runs. Lie it flat on a thick towel to dry. DO NOT TWIST or WRING the water out, it will make matters much worse! Let it dry naturally. Do not be tempted to hurry it up with an iron or you could end up with subtle scorch marks on it. (I know this from fabric dying experiments.)
