Changing pattern size and threads used

by Jeanette
(New Zealand)

I have been given a large amount of cross stitch thread and patterns.

I am keen to make, for our four grandchildren, a Christmas stocking each. The patterns I have are very elaborate, which isn't a problem, but they use only two or three threads and make quite a small stocking.

I don't find close work so enjoyable to do at night now. so, can I use more threads (even 6) and a larger weave? What size thread count to 6 strands. Would this look ok?

How do I know what size the end stocking will be if I do this? It just seems as though it would be easier for me as once I start I have to make all four. Over a few years is no problem as the children are aged from 1 month to 3 years.

I would really appreciate some feedback maybe from somebody else who has done the same or experts on this site. Many thanks.

You might find the cross stitch calculator handy for working out the size of the finished piece if you use a different fabric count, Jeanette. You would need to know the stitch count in both directions.

It is unusual to use all 6 strands of floss at once. You could do so if you picked Binca fabric which is often the one children first learn to sew on.

I hope this helps.
