Changing from 18 to 16 count Aida

by Lynn
(Canada)

Hello, I have kit with 18 count aida cloth in it, I am considering changing the cloth to 16 count but not sure if I should chance the results. One friend tells me the pattern will be bigger and I'll run out of thread. Thought I'd ask an expert before I did anything. :)

If you change from 18 to 16 count Aida cloth, then yes the design would be a little bigger. It would also take a little more thread.

Of course how much, would depend on the stitch count of the design.

For a small design it will not be very different and as long as you have a quality kit you may well find that they have provided a little extra thread so you may have enough.

If the project is a large one, then you may well find that you do not have enough thread in the kit. If the kit gives the manufacturers colour numbers, either Anchor or DMC for example, then it would not be too difficult to buy extra should you need it.

Some kits use a cheaper brand of thread and do not give the shade numbers, in which case you would be taking the risk of running out and not being able to find extra if necessary.

Question about changing count sizes
by: Wendy

I am pleased that this question was asked. I have often seen large patterns that I'd love to see in a small size. So, now I'll try just changing the count of the fabric & perhaps ending up with a lovely petit point, which I love. I guess it's best to use half cross stitch, but should I perhaps use an extra thread? I just adore petit point!
Cheers ...
