Blackwork Fill Patterns

by Gail Jones
(San Bernardino, Calif. USA)

Hi Carol,

Do you make up all your fill patterns for blackwork out of your head? Also, are there any places one can go to get blackwork fill patterns that are "public domain" and able to be used by others for patterns they want to sell?

Thank you for your input.

In Christ,
Gail J.

Thank you for the input

Hello all,

Thank you for the helpful input on blackwork fills. It is nice to know that I can make up my own which is fun, or use fills I see elsewhere too, for my own designing.

In Christ,
Gail J.

Blackwork Fill Patterns

Hi Gail! Here is a link to a page of links that should be pretty good. And making up blackwork is easy. I've been doodling up line designs on graph paper since I was a little girl. :>)

Designing blackwork fills
by: Carol

Gail,

I do design my own blackwork fill patterns but also use some that come with the blackwork module for the computer design program that I use, Easy Cross.

You will find the basic fills in many designers' work, and can use them yourself without a problem. However it is fun to design just the right fill for a particular design.

When it comes to stitching a fill pattern remember that separate stitches, such as a cross stitch in the centre of another shape, will probably mean that the pattern cannot be stitched reversibly. You need a continuous line in order to make the back and front of your work look the same.

Also give the same pattern to two different stitchers and ask them to devise a way of stitching it reversibly and they will both come up with different "journeys" that get the job done.

So feel free to use whatever fills you wish on your designs, but do be careful not to copy the design idea itself.
