Blackwork book

by Stacie
(USA)

Is there a good instructional book on 'Blackwork' that shows you how to pick-out the 'pathways' or 'journeys'? Also, is it necessary to create a pattern that is identical front and back? I mean, is it a 'blackwork' sin if your work deviates from the 'golden' rule. If so what does one do?

Answer
My e-book Blackwork for beginners contains basic instructions for stitching blackwork. There are 8 designs included with step by step instructions that explain the routes to take when stitching in double running stitch.

It isn't essential to use this stitch if the piece you are making will be framed, as long as you do not carry the thread across open areas on the back.

If however, you are working a tablecloth or item that won't be framed then it is nice to have the back looking as good as the front.

If you are looking for more instruction on blackwork journeys and how to stitch the different fill patterns then you may be interested in my printed book Blackwork Stitch by Stitch which has all the content of the ebook and more besides! The last section of this book contains almost 50 different fill patterns charted out step by step so that you can stitch them easily. A note is made by each pattern, stating whether it is reversible or not.

You can order this book, at £11.95 + £2.50 p+p by using the button below or read more about it at the link above.

As far as I am concerned, it not required that all Blackwork be reversible. My favourite reference is the Beginner's Guide to Blackworkby Lesley Wilkins.
