backing for redwork embroidery

by Ellen D
(New Jersey, USA)

Is it necessary to back Redwork embroidery? And, if it is used, then what type of fabric is best used for it? Is the fabric removed after the embroidery is completed? Or does it stay attached?

Thank you, Ellen

I wouldn't bother unless the fabric you choose to work on is too thin to conceal the stitches that form on the underside.

If you can see the thread through it, you can put a piece of muslin on the back with some wash-away stabilizer you can get at the fabric store. Make sure both fabrics have been washed and dried first or you may end up with unpleasant shrinkage if you wash it later!
