Backing embroidery

by Caroline Jim

When you embroider on a white background, do you need a backing so your threads don't show. I want to embroider some potteries onto squares and then make them into a quilt, but when I have done embroidery before on a printed white fabric, you can see the threads on the back.

Backing Embroidery

Do a sample - if you can see the threads through the fabric you need backing. It is always useful anyway as it gives the fabric a bit more body. I use cotton sheeting, even old sheeting from the edge of sheets can be used or the backs of old pillowcases, or mens shirts if they are pure cotton - a way of recycling!
