assembling crazy quilt blocks

by Pat
(Ipswich MA USA)

Should I leave a seam allowance on my crazy quilt blocks or just sew the blocks together, or even sew the blocks on a lattice?

I think the seams may be too thick if I don't use a seam allowance. Any ideas?

I would sew them together with a small seam allowance, Pat. You can try leaving the patches unstitched near the edge of the blocks, and then just seaming the background muslin together where they join. You can then over- or under-lap the patches across the seam to make it less noticeable.

Another method would be to add plain strips of fabric between the embroidered patches. As there will only be one layer of fabric on these strips that would cut down the bulk of the seams.

I hope these ideas help. Maybe someone else can give you some more ideas?

Regards,

Carol
