Alternative to Needlework Needed

Alternative to Needlework Needed

Okay, I know this might sound odd but are there any alternatives to needlework. You know, you must have had a few occasions where you just can't put the needle to the fabric and get a solid stitch.

For example, I like to embellish different things and while I'm not the best needlework person in the world, I can hold my own with cross stitching and such but sometimes the needle just doesn't help.

With my latest project, I tacked down fabric and ribbons with small stitches but then figured out that I needed to actually use fabric glue in order to make sure everything was secure. (I'm using it as a carry-on bag for travel).

So what do you do first, glue or sew? If you sew first, you really can't glue but if you glue first then trying to get a needle through both fabric and glue is a HUGE challenge.

Any suggestions to solve this little problem?

(I attached a picture of my carry-on bag project if that helps to give you ideas...)

Thanks for your help,

Sue

Are There Any Alternatives to Needlework
by: Valerie Kalyani

Yes, there is an alternative! There are two products you can use.

One is called Wonder Under. It is a fine web of iron-on adhesive on a sheet of paper. You iron it to the cloth, peel away the paper, then iron it to something else. It makes an instant iron-on patch.

You can also use Stitch Witchery. It is the same substance, but not on paper. You sandwich it between two pieces of fabric and iron them together.

Neither of these will wash out and you can sew right through them too.

Attaching ribbon
by: Trudy

You could temporarily attach the ribbon with fusible webbing (the iron on type), then applique around the edges with your sewing machine. That's what I would do :)
