Aida fabric bpi

What is the difference between ct and bpi in cross stitch fabric?

That is an excellent question, Mavis.
Normally you would see the size of an Aida fabric listed as 14, 16 or 18 count (or ct), which means that you can fit that number of stitches into each inch of fabric. The same system is used for evenweave fabrics such as Linda, Jobelan or linen, although you would normally half the count to give the number of stitches as that type of material is often stitched over two fabric threads.
As Aida fabric is woven in blocks, you may sometimes see the size listed in bpi. These initials stand for "blocks per inch". If a fabric has 14 blocks per inch you would be able to stitch 14 crosses on top of those blocks. You would actually have 15 holes if you include the starting hole of the first stitch, and the last hole of the 14th stitch.
This is a more accurate way of describing the fabric as each block is actually created by many "fabric threads".
I hope this helps to clear up the mystery jargon somewhat, Mavis.

Carol
