Afghan Stitch - Crocheting in pattern as you go

I want to crochet a picture into an afghan, but don't want to use single crochet. Can you crochet a picture into an afthan using the afghan stitch? If so, how? Do you always keep the right to left row the same color and just change the color in the left to right row?
