Acidic stain removal

I have a beautiful piece of needlework that my Mom made. Unfortunately, it was mounted on cardboard. Through the years the cardboard bled through, leaving brown, acidic type stains. Has anyone had success in removing stains like this without harming the fabric. Thanks
